Lincoln Park

The Center of a Historic District Neighborhood with Deep Roots in Music

Located in the heart of the Lincoln Park neighborhood, this park has a rich and significant past that is integral to Newark’s history, serving residents for more than 300 years as one of the city’s original colonial-era ‘Commons’. The area formerly known as “South Common” was renamed to Lincoln Park after President Abraham Lincoln, who visited the area in 1861.

Today, the park plays host to community events, wellness activities, and the annual Lincoln Park Music Festival, which garners 50,000 residents and visitors over two weekends every summer.  With notable amenities in the neighborhood, Lincoln Park provides six acres of open space at the center of a thriving arts and culture district.

Lincoln Park Restoration Project

The Lincoln Park Restoration Project will feature a much-needed facelift to the Park, a National Historic Register landmark that has served a wide array of the city’s residents for more than 300 years as one of Newark’s original colonial-era ‘Commons’ public gathering places – the South Commons – renamed as Lincoln Park to commemorate President Lincoln’s visit to the area in 1861.

The Lincoln Park Restoration Project is the transformational centerpiece of a five-year planned reemergence of the Lincoln Park Neighborhood as an artistic, energetic, healthy and empowered community.

“The park improvements will include infrastructure for arts, music and cultural programming and festivals; respite and seating areas; park restrooms and upkeep of green spaces for youth and families to play.  The upgrades of Lincoln Park will also enable more diverse programming for the park which will enhance vending and other economic opportunities for minority and women-owned businesses,"  Anthony Smith, executive director of Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District.

Project planning is underway with construction expected to commence in 2026.
